A Few Blessings

Yesterday's legacy question asked about blessings and how I have used them.

One of the easier questions to these is the blessing of my education, particularly my law degree.  I am grateful that my degree and law license have allowed me to have a career that gives me a flexible schedule with above average pay.  I have been able to be what my son calls a "hands-on parent" while earning enough to maintain a decent standard of living.  Practicing law has allowed me to be my own boss making more per hour than many other parents who have less flexibility.

Yes, there are months when I went without a paycheck.  Yes I find myself working at all hours of the day.  That's what it means to be the boss.  But I never have to explain why I'm leaving early or coming in late.  I could bring the kids to the office when they were little.  I get to help people and get paid for it.   I can take Friday afternoons off to judge high school debates.  I have been able to have a career that I enjoy and pays the bills.  At the same time, I have had the time, energy, and other resources to help my kids feel important and loved.  I am blessed to be able to empower my kids, my clients, my employees, and myself.

I don't usually count my blessings, but I do try to recognize them.  This week I am blessed to be very busy at work when many people are lamenting the downturn in the economy.  I'm blessed to have a husband who looks for ways to show me how he loves me.  I'm blessed that my children are truly good people.  My mother is a continued blessing in supporting me in the office and with my family.

See, that's why I don't count my blessings.  The list would go on and on, but this post can't do the same.  Some of the ways I use these blessings are to do some pro bono legal work, although pro bono opportunities in my area of expertise are hard to come by.  I volunteer at Mi Casa Resource Center, help the Marching Band and Speech Team at Pomona High School, judge debate tournaments, and ... well, I just try to help wherever I can, which was the subject of a recent post.

I liked this question, but it's not one that currently plays a role when I counsel clients.  I might have to use it in my work more often.

Consider your blessings, how can you help them multiply in the world?
