Wills for Vets and Veterans Aid & Attendance

In this column from Saturday, Chuck Raash states there are two types of Americans on Memorial Day -- those who spend the day honoring the war dead and those who have a picnic or shop at a sale.  I don't think it's that simple, but I do know that I could spend more time, energy and thought honoring those who serve.  Sometimes, I just don't know how.

As you know from recent posts, I'm off to find another way to blend my professional passion with a desire to give back.  For quite some time, I've volunteered with Wills for Vets, a grassroots program designed to provide basic estate planning documents for veterans. Unfortunately, I've never once been approached by a veteran about this benefit.  Of course, I could do more to promote it, and this post is a start.  If you're a veteran, check out this site at www.willsforvets.com.  It also has some interesting links about the Veterans Aid & Attendance program, an esoteric program that could be better publicized.  The Aid & Attendance program helps pay some of the cost of assisted living and nursing home care for certain war veterans and their spouses.

On this Memorial Day, I will enjoy a picnic, but I will also spend time thinking about those whose service and sacrifice have enriched my life and the lives of all of us.
